Profile of ASQ (American Society for Quality)

ASQ is the leading quality improvement organization in North America, with over 90,000 individual and over 500 sustaining members worldwide. A not-for-profit professional association headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, USA, ASQ carries out a variety of professional, educational, and informational programs. ASQ's vision is to be the world's recognized champion and leading authority on all issues related to quality.

ASQ was founded in 1946 with the merger of several North American quality societies, including some from Canada. These groups were formed to share information about statistical quality control after classes on that subject were held during World War II to improve and maintain the quality of defense materials.

Most of the quality methods now used throughout the world -- including statistical process control, quality cost measurement and control, total quality management, failure analysis, and zero defects -- were initiated by ASQ members.

ASQ's mission is to facilitate continuous improvement and increased customer satisfaction by identifying, communicating, and promoting the use of quality principles, concepts, and technology; and thereby be recognized throughout the world as the leading authority on and champion for quality.

ASQ Canada

ASQ's board of directors voted in 2005 to change the name of Region 4, which represented all of Canada, to ASQ Canada, a naming first for the organization. Since that time, ASQ Canada has continued to grow and currently boasts 15 sections and more than 5,700 members. This is a direct quote from a short article on ASQ Canada as part of its "Gazeta Global" as recently published by ASQ. In it you will find some important words from our then Section Chair, Govind Ramu. Govind was interviewed by ASQ as were several others from across Canada and as you can see they have some good things to say about ASQ and, more specifically, ASQ Canada. Please note that anyone wishing to view this article will have to log in on the ASQ site for access.

A list of the Canadian Sections and their site links is provide at ASQ Canada Sections.

Now that we have a more inspiring name for Region 4, we hope to be able to enjoy a certain measure of semi-autonomy since it is evident there are some things cultural if not professional that would deserve our attention here in Canada. We are blessed with good support from the Quality community from coast to coast and while there are other organizations involved in the Quality movement, it is clear that our 15 sections are busy exchanging views, participating in learning and certification activities and encouraging young and aspiring Quality professionals to join ASQ Canada.
