Performance
measurement is one of the cornerstones of business
excellence. Business excellence models encourage the use of
performance measures, but in addition and more importantly, they
consider the
design of performance measurement systems to ensure that measures are
aligned
to strategy, and that the system is working effectively in monitoring,
communicating, and driving performance – www.BPIR.com
In
tonight’s
presentation, Dennis will focus on critical aspects of Performance
Measurement,
including:
- Why measure performance?
- Principles/concepts of Performance measurement
- How performance measures are derived
- How measures are applied in practice (Government/Private Sector)
- Some challenges in Performance Measurement

Building
an e-learning Strategyfacilitated by Stephen Davies.
A study commissioned by the
Conference Board of
Canada concluded that “the most successful countries of the 21st
century
will focus on lifelong learning, and the most innovative will use
e-learning to
do so. A well-trained labour force that consistently learns new skills
is able
to drive economic prosperity to new heights. E-learning is a tool that
enables
employers to ensure that their employees gain new skills. E-learning
will be
the tool of choice for 21st century employees who need access to
flexible,
just-in-time learning systems”.
Tonight’s ASQ member event will
focus on
understanding and building an e-learning strategy in the workplace, and
will be
presented in two parts.
Part One - “Changing Demographics –
the impact on training and learning”
This first part of the evening will cover the changing demographics of the workplace and the impact that the “Millennial” generation will have on both training philosophies and how communication is impacted.
Part Two - “Effective on-line
learning – blending different training
types for maximum return”
The second part of the evening will look at how we should holistically look at training strategy and how we can effectively blend together on-line learning with other more traditional modes of training for maximum effectiveness while retaining a cost-effective bottom line.
Both of the presentations
will be interactive with exercises for audience participation.
The
attendees are encouraged to bring with them examples of training issues
or
thoughts on training strategy to be able to bring them into the
discussion.
There will also be a focus on how training interacts with quality
management
systems, particularly on proof of competency which is still today a real
issue
for quality systems auditors.
About Stephen Davies
Stephen is a senior member
of the ASQ and the Marketing Chairman of the Standards Engineering
Society. He
is currently an independent consultant for on-line learning companies
for both
business development and for developing learning strategies, and also
teaches
courses in Entrepreneurship and Operations Management at the Sprott
School of
Business - Carleton University in Ottawa.
Stephen has designed many
key training programs for large government and private organizations,
most
notably the Canadian Department of National Defense (DND), Canada
Revenue
Agency, Corporations Canada, Abbott Laboratories and Sunlife Financial.
The
highlight of his teaching was delivering risk and process training
programs in
both Afghanistan and Bosnia for DND
and SNL-Lavalin PAE. Stephen is an award-winning speaker who brings a
wealth of
experience to the design of novel approaches to training, particularly
in the
Standards space. His previous
role was VP
Business Development and co-founder of DISTIL Interactive, a producer of

Future of Quality Study (pdf)

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has commissioned a study to determine the future of Quality. The ASQ Future Study comprises of three major components:
- Identifying the key forces that are most likely to shape the future of quality and the world;
- Developing alternative scenarios describing how these forces might unfold;
- Determining implications for organizations and the quality field and for quality professionals.
This study was conducted by a panel of nearly 100 thought leaders of the quality movement from around the globe, representing every sector of the economy, shared their insights in order to gain a credible understanding of the potential impact of current trends on the future. Through multiple rounds of considerations and on line dialogue, the panelists arrived eventually at a final rank order of their choices- the Seven Key Forces shaping the future of quality.
1. Globalization
2. Social Responsibility
3. New Dimensions for quality
4. Aging Population
5. Health Care
6. Environmental concerns, and
7. 21st Century technology
Armed with this expert view of forces shaping the future, ASQ developed four brief alternate scenarios depicting a spectrum of potential future world conditions. The scenarios serve as narratives to help people imagine what the world might be like in the future as influenced by the forces of change for quality. Paul Borawski will present the results of the study, and discuss the implications for organizations and the quality field and for quality professionals

LEAN SIX SIGMA: THE LEADERSHIP EDGE co-presented by Rod Morgan and Bill Clarke of e-Zsigma
One of the great things about (Lean) Six Sigma, as I see it, is it is as much a leadership tool as it is a quality program. It really develops better thinking and every time it is wasted on those other than high potential individuals I find it a questionable exercise."
........Jack Welch, former Chairman & CEO General Electric
Over the last 10 years, Lean Six Sigma has rapidly grown to become the most widely accepted and successful business process improvement strategy in the world today. In recent years, this success has translated into the service sector, including banking, insurance, hospitality healthcare and public service.
This interactive, two-hour workshop will provide you with an introduction to Lean Six Sigma and how it can be applied to the Service as well as Public sectors – the vision, creating, aligning, communicating, nurturing, managing and sustaining Lean Six Sigma in such a way that an organization can accept, institutionalize, and effectively implement, as well as drive successful continuous improvement projects that yield measurable, sustainable results.
PRESENTATION OUTLINE
• Introduction to Lean and Six Sigma in the Service Sector
• Lean + Six Sigma - Strength and unity in diversity
• Raising the bar for problem-solving: DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control)
• Overview of Lean & Six Sigma concepts, tools & methodology
• The roles, responsibilities and skill set for each member of a Lean Six Sigma community
